Montmorency Thief Liar Gentleman? After Words Eleanor Updale Books

"Montmorency: Thief, Liar, Gentleman, written by debut author Eleanor Updale, is a completely original novel about the life of a criminal in London, 1875. After falling through a sky roof of a warehouse while trying to escape from the police, Prisoner 493 is sentenced to jail, with the exception of the very frequent visits to Doctor Robert Farccett who tries to repair Prisoner 493 from his long fall. 493 is burdened living life in a jail cell with horrendous living conditions until two years later when he is released and has to live on his own. Staying in a hideous hotel and going by the name Scarper, 493 figures out a plan to earn his living by stealing valuable products and escaping through the sewers. He then starts his other life as the rich gentleman Montmorency that lives in the fabulous Marimion Hotel going to the opera every weekend until one of his new rich friends want him to try and sneak into a country's government building and gather some information. Now Montmorency has to decide whether to help his friend, which would change his life forever and can make it possibly worse, or he can keep on living the way he is. Eleanor Updale thrusts handcuffs on the readers, hooking them in whole time. With Montmorency being her first novel, she does an outstandingly good job describing scenes but still lets the readers use their imagination through the suspense and mystery. Updale uses vocabulary that helps the reader fly through the story even faster with the excellent plotline. Telling it in third person, Updale informs the readers with the whole story in all aspects and tells the reader what the secondary characters are thinking. Any reader from ages 10 and up who loves suspense and historical fiction should read this novel. The reader's see that even being rich, doesn't make every thing perfect.

Montmorency Thief Liar Gentleman? After Words Eleanor Updale Books Reviews

Good book, I read this years ago and just bought the kindle version.
Excellent way to learn some English history! A vivid look at Victorian England through the eyes of a thief who awakes from trying to escape capture into the care of a doctor - baring in mind that doctors of the period knew little of the body and less of sanitation and antibiotics etc. Montmorency is taken to the Royal Science Academy (?) to show off the doctors work and learns some useful info which he puts to good use upon his release from prison. And so the story starts......
Definately recommend this book. Both for both sexes and from 4th grade up. Excellent adult read also.
Dark like a hybrid of Sherlock Holmes, Sweeney Todd and Ripper Street, but living very much in the confines of YA, this wonderful series is well written and researched, neither too commonplace nor too far fetched and features a strong cast--strangely (and also thankfully) lacking in the norm of half-baked, barely realized teenage characters that all seem the same person
The setting, Victorian England, was a good place to be if you were an upper class, wealthy male. Montmorency seeks to assume membership in that elite group using skills honed in prison, lessons learned as a science project of a well know surgeon, and the newly developed sewer system of Londo. Read this book first before moving to the rest of the series.
A good book is like an old friend. You can set it down, forget about it for awhile, and when you pick it back up nothing has changed. I read this book in 8th grade on a whim. I am now a post-graduate of three years and still find my way back to this book from time to time. The others in the series are just as good.
I read this book years ago and loved it - mostly loved the unique plot. I did not want to put it down. When my mother told me that she hadn't read much lately because she had been having a difficult time keeping interest, I thought of this book. How does one create a city? What makes a man a gentleman. What is class? If you're looking for a fast, intelligent, thought provoking read, this book is for you.
A wonderful exploration of growth, repentance, atonement. A great story on what makes a man valuable, how we see each other's value, or don't. How we become a gentleman or a thief. Good guy, bad guy? They are all in us and this is the story of one man making himself over in his best version while not shrinking from the struggle that entails. A wonderful read with a great message.
