"When Golf was Fun" is a collection of tales from what is known as the "beer and barbecue circuit" of golf tournaments. These tournaments held in small town all across the state of Texas were not only the beginning of the careers of many great golfers but also produced some local legends. It was a time when golf was still a game, not a big business. This collection of 38 stories will entertain and amaze as you read first-hand accounts of some of the greatest exploits in the history of golf. You will read about local golf pros who are unknown outside of their local country club and you will also read about legends like Ben Crenshaw, Bruce Lietzke, Charles Coody, Miller Barber, Ben Hogan and others. Texas has a very rich golf history and much of it is captured in "When Golf was Fun." The late, great beer and barbecue circuit was a bygone era of Texas golf in which many Lone Star legends were born and raised but has since given way to the more civilized and organized golf industry we know today. Much like baseball's barnstorming days, the barbecue circuit was a series of unaffiliated events that brought an extremely high level of golf and excitement to tiny towns like Center and Athens; Quanah and Pampa-places you might otherwise never have known even existed.
When Golf Was Fun Pat Wheeler 9780985326340 Books
Pat Wheeler goes into the early days of golf on the Texas Beer and BBQ circuit. Something many us golf fans know little about. "When Golf Was Fun" is a refreshingly light read sprinkled throughout with numerous anecdotes of some of the true golf legends. Pat's remarkable story telling has a way of getting beyond their professional personas causing the reader to feel like they're listening in on conversations between old friends. I highly recommend it!Product details

Great stories if Texas golf
Great Book. Reminds me old golfing days.
Enjoyed the tales of golf and those who made it special in Texas during the heyday of the infamous barbeque circuit. Well done Patrrick!
And I was there. This book brought back a lot of memories of events and people. It is well written and easy to read. If you are a golfer from East Texas, like me, or from anywhere else, this book will be hard to put down. It tells true stories about real people. Thanks to the author for preserving this history!
Great read whether you grew up playing golf in Texas or just love the game
It helps if you know or heard of many of the characters in the book. Pat Wheeler does a great job describing golf when it was fun.
I loved this book! i played the BBQ Tour from 1960 - 1970. I knew almost every name in the book and I can honestly say that every tale was totally true. The Homero Blancas story is spot on and I can attest to it because I was there... not just one of the millions that say they were.
The only sad thing for me was to learn that my dear friend Billy Hooten from Pittsburg, TX had passed away... he was quite the treasure. My Dad grew up playing with Bill's Dad, Brooks Hooten and I even had a crush on his sister... wow, what memories.
Even if you don't know anything about the East Texas BBQ circuit, this book will keep you laughing and you will get a great inside look into the best little golf tour on earth.
