We cannot run
We cannot hide
We will not beg

For two bloody years Battle Fleet has fought to hold back the Nameless... and failed. Assault upon Earth is now inevitable. The men and women of Battle Fleet must ready weapons that have fallen short so many times before and prepare for a last defence of their homes.

Only one thing is now certain, from this battle there will be no retreat, for this time, there is nowhere left to retreat to.

The Last Charge The Nameless War Trilogy Book 3 eBook Edmond Barrett

The last book in The Nameless Trilogy is as good as the previous books. Well, at least that is my opinion. Also, in my opinion, the book blurb is slightly misleading. It makes the potential reader believe that the main story element in this book would be the assault on Earth. Well, it is A main story element that has to be said. It is not THE main story element though. It is “only” the first part of the book.

As usual the book is filled with action. This is military science fiction and it is mostly very well done. We continue to follow our friends both in space and on the ground. Even though the focus are on the defense of Earth and the events following it the surviving people on Landfall are not forgotten. Personally I liked the fleet action the best but that is not really much of a surprise for those who know me.

One thing that did irk me a bit though was the fact that the humans managed to come up with all kinds of quite effective anti-missile defenses but they never managed to extend the range of their own fighting capability. The fighting was almost always some variant of getting in range before being blown up. After all, in any realistic war extending over several years you would eventually get hold of some scrap of enemy equipment that you could analyze and even without it once the need becomes apparent scientists usually find a way, at least in wartime. A very minor “irk” though.

On the whole I really liked the book. It is fairly realistic in both the science and the military department. Well written, well balanced and with plenty of likable characters. My cup of tea.

The book is the last book in the trilogy and as such it concludes the current story arc. It is a decent enough conclusion although I have to say that I was kind of expecting some last twist to the story. Instead things kind of fizzled out at the end without much fanfare. Having said that it is a very realistic ending so in some sense I am happy that the author did not throw in some bizarre plot twist. Naturally the humans suffered some regrettable losses and the epilogue wrote off one or two more people from any future active duty I would say.

Speaking of the future, the book may have ended the trilogy but it definitely did not end the overall story. The Nameless are still there, far from finished. This book really begs for a second trilogy. Personally I will be rather disappointed if we do not get a continuation of this universe.

The Last Charge The Nameless War Trilogy Book 3 eBook Edmond Barrett Reviews

This was the third and last book in a trilogy and the author really delivered. In this final installment of the series victory hangs in the balance, all the key characters face their final battles and there are many surprises for the reader. Things are not sugar coated or glossed over, there is a feeling of reality about the characters and the personal and professional challenges they face and the ending is very true to the human race and our reaction when threatened. I strongly recommend this book - just make sure you read the first two
The first book was excellent science fiction with a well created and thought out universe. The author set the scene nicely without too going too far into the future. The second book introduced ground combat on The world of Landfall and was a bit back from book one in terms of holding my interest. Anyway.....book three was excellent- one of the best science fiction stories that I have ever read. It was satisfyingly long and developed the story through a number of battles, campaigns and viewpoints while gripping my attention throughout.

I really enjoy this series and in particular, this book. The author has a great sense of how to develop and tell a good story- here's hoping that he does not hang up his pen after this series.
He may not win a National Book Award (or its British or Irish equivalent) but he tells a good story. These stories are told by men and women I have cared about through the three books all woven together into a compelling trilogy. It is about war so there is blood and people die or get wounded. Sometimes a ship is simply blown out of space -- poof it is gone. Other times the reader is in the ship as the missiles hit. I can't say this is a fun book, it is actually quite dark in some of its possibilities for the future of humanity.

The people in the book understand that if this war is not won, there will be no more humans on earth or anywhere in space. The men and women who command the ships, set the strategies, fly the spacefighters, and carry the stretchers are all worth getting to know.
This was the Battle of Moscow in space. The series was well written with limited Dues and characters you could care about. Edited very well with limited errors, which is always a good thing in independent publishing.

The only negative was the bad time-line. It's less than 50 years in the future and our ability to travel FTL comes from reverse engineering alien tech, something that with our understanding of current physics, would be almost impossible. I just have to ask, if you could go back in time and plop a lap top down in 1900, with the limited knowledge of electricity and micro circuitry, would we have laptops and full blown computer systems by 1910?

Other than this minor pet peeve, I enjoyed the series and look forward to other works by the author.
Great trilogy. I was so happy it got wrapped up in a third book. So many series are coming out now that have a seemingly infinite number of books. Coming to a conclusion requires discipline and structure to clean up all loose ends and to give meaning to all the various characters. The writing was good but there were some typos but not enough to detract seriously from the story. The human characters were interesting, they had multi-dimension personalities (the admiral in charge of the fleet regularly ordered men and women to their deaths to save humanity but it was clear that he was paying a terrible, personal price from giving such orders). The alien foe is interesting, nearly invincible against human technology but like all technology, the aliens had weaknesses that could be exploited by humans... meaning it was brains and bravery that won the day, not technology.
This was a satisfying ending to a good series.
